Local Street Lighting - 163rd Place, City of Hammond, IN

163rd Place is located in the Hessville Neighborhood of Hammond. This area has narrow right of ways and tight streets.

NIES Engineering was selected by The City of Hammond to determine a reasonable and cost effective solution to this issue. The street was to be reconstructed and the project was to include decorative lighting and sewer separation.

In order to provide adequate lighting to the area, NIES Engineering developed a lighting plan that utilized the Granville Series of decorative lighting from the Holophane outdoor lighting company. This series of lighting meets both the mechanical and aesthetic requirements of today's lighting standards. The lights chosen incorporate an ISD SuperGlass reflector that increases the amount of light that reaches the roadway which maximizes pole spacing for a more cost effective and efficient design. They also allow for flexibility in the design process and offer features such as tool-less entry, integral relamping without removing glass, and an integral photo-control to allow for easy installation and maintenance.

NIES Engineering completed this design while working with City Engineering, lighting, sewer and water departments to meet all of the City's needs. Upon selection of the lighting and completion of the design, NIES assisted with Bidding and award of the contract and the overseeing of construction.

The street construction and lighting installation was completed on time and within budget, and the residents now enjoy a much improved driving surface and a more aesthetically pleasing and effective lighting design for better visibility.

Local Street Reconstruction - 163rd Place, City of Hammond, IN

163rd Place is located in the Hessville Neighborhood of Hammond. This area has narrow right of ways and tight streets.

NIES Engineering was selected by The City of Hammond to determine a reasonable and cost effective solution to this issue. The street was to be reconstructed and the project was to include decorative lighting and sewer separation. In order to meet the city standards of a 31' wide road, the parkways were narrowed restricting the slopes of the residential driveways resulting in a challenging task to meet all the requirements for proper drainage.

NIES Engineering designed the street while working with City Engineering, lighting, sewer and water departments to meet all of the City's needs. Upon completion of the design, NIES assisted with Bidding and award of the contract and the overseeing of construction, closely working with the residents and local business owners assuring minimum disruption to their daily routines.

The street construction was completed on time and within budget and the residents now enjoy a much improved driving surface, more space for parking and effective drainage.

Chemical Feed Modifications Water Filtration - City of Hammond, IN

The Hammond Water Filtration Plant utilizes conventional surface water treatment of Lake Michigan water to provide potable water to the residents of Hammond and surrounding communities. Overall, nearly 500,000 people count on the Hammond Water Filtration Plant to provide a safe, reliable source of water.

This plant, nominally rated at 50 mgd, is situated on the shore of Lake Michigan, surrounded by commercial establishments, recreational amenities, manufacturing facilities and residences. As such, safety of the plant's chemical systems is critical.

In order to ensure the continued safe and reliable application of chemicals, the Hammond Water Department contracted with NIES Engineering, Inc. to design modifications to their chemical feed systems at the Hammond Water Filtration Plant. NIES designed improvements to the chlorine, ammonia and fluoride feed systems at the Hammond Water Filtration Plant. Previously, chemical feed equipment was housed in facilities originally designed in the 1930's.

As such, careful consideration was necessary to bring the feed systems up to modern design standards. Building modifications were made to separate the chlorine and ammonia systems, and cordon the chlorine feed equipment off from the rest of the plant. In doing this, the required movement of chlorine containers is minimized, further improving safety.

In addition to the building modifications and the installation of new equipment, the Hammond Water Department decided to install chemical scrubbers for both chlorine and ammonia. While the amount of ammonia stored on-site is below the threshold for developing a Risk Management Plan, an ammonia scrubber was installed to provide an additional level of safety. A dry-media chlorine scrubber was also installed, eliminating the need for secondary chemical containment and chemical mixing and heating.

Site Engineering for Herman & Kittle Properties, Inc. Saxony Homes Project Hammond, IN

NIES Engineering assisted Herman & Kittle and the Hammond Housing Authority with their second development project at the Housing Authority's Columbia Center site. We worked hand-in-hand with the Hammond Housing Authority, the City of Hammond and the developer; Herman & Kittle Properties of Indianapolis within a tight time frame.

NIES provided a topographic survey of the site, a final plat of survey for the proposed Saxony Homes site and an Alta Survey for the consortium providing the financing for the development. We also continued master planning assistance for the entire Columbia Center site and represented Herman & Kittle in planning approval negotiations with the City. Planning permission was granted and the project moved ahead.

NIES then provided site engineering plans with underground stormwater detention, utility connections, new water main including a switch from private to public water supply, sidewalks including handicapped access and graded parking lots. Included in these plans were demolition drawings for existing buildings with site erosion control. We worked closely with the City's Planning Department to ensure that our plans adhered to all appropriate codes and ordinances.

Finally, NIES provided construction staking to assist the contractor during construction. Our ability to provide one-stop-shop services to the developer coupled with our familiarity with the Departments of the City of Hammond contributed to the smooth progress of the project that further improves this area of the City.
